DeCost Smith was a New York artist and writer who traveled to the Rosebud, Lower Brule, and Standing Rock Indian Reservations in Dakota Territory in 1884. Collection contains a three-page typed article (n.d.) entitled "Northern Plains Picture Writing" and one page of pencil drawings used to illustrate the article. DeCost Smith was born in Skaneateles, New York, about 1865, the son of Reul Smith. He studied art in Paris and New York City and traveled around the world doing paintings of nature. He spent time on the Rosebud, Lower Brule, and Standing Rock Indian Reservations in Dakota Territory in 1884. He also wrote about Native American topics. He died in 1939.
